Instruction

These texts are written with the aim of teaching how to do something or explaining a topic. Normally written by specialists for non-specialists.

  • Tutorial - Text explaining something, like school books (formerly known as "Explanation")
  • Review - Review of a book, movie, product, person. Description and evaluation. May include CW's Ratings: Numeric evaluations of products or services; includes Rosso's "Blurb": description page for a place or program (used to find out if you want to go there)

Propaganda

Such texts try to convince the reader to buy a product or act in a certain way.

  • Pamphlet - A small treatise [...] on some subject or question of current or temporary interest, personal, social, political, ecclesiastical, or controversial, on which the writer desires to appeal to the public (OED)
  • Petition - A petition is a request to an authority, most commonly a government official or public entity.
  • Promotional / Advertisement - includes "Classified Ad"
  • Shop, Shopping - Vedrana: Web pages created with intention to sell including online stores

Regulations

  • Contracts / Disclaimer / Terms and Conditons - legally binding exchange of promises or agreement between parties that the law will enforce (Wikipedia)
  • Law, Regulation, Rule, Proclamation (adminstrative and regulatory texts)

Information

Lists of various sorts, mostly incomplete sentences.

  • Agenda, Schedule, Calendar - List of upcoming or regular events, often sorted by date and time. Includes Georg's "Examination dates", includes CW's University course listing: A list of numbers, titles and description of course offered in some department or departments, possibly including information such as prerequisites, instructor, meeting time and place; includes Georg's "Organisational data (course)", includes Georg's "Cinema programme"

  • Forecast - Provide Information about the future, often quite short and using numbers. Including Weather Report, Election Forecast etc.
  • Index, Sitemap - Web page with lots of links to the same website.
  • Linkfarm - generated to attract mostly automatic traffic from web crawlers to a certain set of websites in order to optimise the ranking of these websites in search engines.
  • Link Collection - List of links to other web pages. Includes CW's Hot list: A list of Web sites not controlled by the list’s author, often organized by topic. Includes Rubleske's "Directory of Online Stores" and "Search Results"; Linkfarms - they are bad and useless, but however do list links to other websites.

This label is for reporting events happened in the past

  • Chronicle - A detailed and continuous register of events in order of time; a historical record, esp. one in which the facts are narrated without philosophic treatment, or any attempt at literary style (OED) - CW, includes Rubleske's "Biographical Timeline"

Presentation

This label is for presenting information about an entity.

  • About Page - A web page presenting personal or organizational information, it includes Rosso's and Rubleskes "Course Description" - what's covered in a course; syllabus (Rosso); includes Georg's "Description of a work group".
  • Announcement - Announcing one single event (for example, the launch of a product; a birthday party) in the future. Often combined with an invitation.
  • Biography (Portrayal)

  • Encyclopedia - a comprehensive written compendium or an article therein (on one single topic), includes Rubleske's "Definition/Description" and "Facts-and-Figures Page"; includes Georg's "Glossary Entry" (as a very short Encyclopedian Article)

  • Official Report - Includes annual reports and Executive Summaries (Rubleske) from companies, inspection reports etc. More than just the data/statistics.

Includes CW's "Party Platform": A public declaration of the principles and policy on which a political party proposes to stand (OED); includes CW's "Government program description": A description of the features of government program, written by agency for potential beneficiaries; includes Georg's "Committee proposal"

This is a very diverse set of texts aimed at discussing the state of affairs.

  • Feature Story, News Reportage
  • Front Page - the first page of a newspaper. On the web, a Front Page has a more autonomous status than in the paper world.

  • Newspaper - Collection of several journalistic texts (news, interviews, ...) on one page, maybe only summaries and links
  • Reportage - Longer story about travels, persons, events. The most literature-like journalistic genre.
  • Public Debate - Includes DLee's S_parliament (public debates in parliaments etc.)
  • Speech, Public Speaking - (Rosso) speaking to a group of people in a structured, deliberate manner intended to inform, influence, or entertain the listeners (Wikipedia)

Mostly online communication venues

  • Conversation Forum / Guestbook: Includes Forums where people talk about random things (Derived from Mirko's Comment on Forum,Chat)
  • Community – portals with user-generated content, something like "myspace"
  • Corporate Blog /Clog - Blog run by a company or members of a company. Often on a specific topic, containig almost no personal stories
  • Diaries, Personal Blogs
  • Letter / E-mail
  • Discussion forum / Newsgroup - Interactive discussion on some specific topic. Includes Mirko's "Thematic forums" and "Professional forums"

  • Abstract (Rosso, Rubleske) / Expose (Georg) - title and brief description and reference (Rosso)
  • Essay - A composition of moderate length on any particular subject
  • Research Report / Scientific Report / Academic - Text representing the outcomes of scientific research
